How to upgrade F/W with jms561 under Raspberry Pi

Edit: Danger! Do not use at present. A user reported not recognizing the hard disk after the upgrade.

1.Download Jms561-fw-update.zip and unzip it.

wget https://wiki.radxa.com/mw/images/d/db/Jms561-fw-update.zip
unzip Jms561-fw-update.zip

2.Upgrade firmware, note that you need to connect to your hard drive.

cd jms561-fw-update/
sudo ./JMS561FwUpdate -b backup.bin -f jms561b_v8.1.3.6.bin -d /dev/sda
sudo ./JMS561FwUpdate -b backup.bin -f jms561b_v8.1.3.6.bin -d /dev/sdc

3.Reboot (Unplug the power) and check the version.

cd jms561-fw-update/
sudo ./JMS561FwUpdate -d /dev/sda -v
sudo ./JMS561FwUpdate -d /dev/sdb -v
sudo ./JMS561FwUpdate -d /dev/sdc -v
sudo ./JMS561FwUpdate -d /dev/sdd -v

v8.1.3.6 will be displayed.

The new firmware solves the problem that hard disk temperature cannot be detected.

Warning: Please umount your hard drive before upgrading. After upgrade, you have to system off safely and pull out power plug and then connect it again.

Hi, I don’t have 4 drives plugged into the Sata hat… I only have 3 drives plugged in… will this still work?

It doesn’t matter. It still works.

Just make sure each jms561 has a hard disk connection.

jms561-0-> sata1 & sata2, jms561-1-> sata3 & sata4.

Hi, thanks for the confirmation… with 3 drives, I’m sure each JMS561 has at least 1 hdd connected… will try it tonight and report back…

Thank you setq, that worked.

after running the script, my whole raid array failed…

edit: now /dev/sda spitting out errors…

edit2: in OMV, sda is keeps saying unable to open /dev/sda… and also getting usb reset errors…

Failed to execute command 'export PATH=/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin; export LANG=C.UTF-8; blockdev --getsize64 '/dev/sda' 2>&1' with exit code '1': blockdev: cannot open /dev/sda: No such file or directory

usb 2-2: reset SuperSpeed Gen 1 USB device number 7 using xhci_hcd

Did it reboot? What will lsusb and lsblk print?

Hello, any updates? Please post dmesg.

it rebooted normally… just some corruption on the OLED…but rebooted just fine…

however, now i’m getting super slow speeds when creating raid array… 10mb/s as opposed to 100mb/s previously in the old firmware…

I tested the two firmware without significant speed difference.

There may be a bad connection. Please reinsert the connector.

edit: about the bad connection, the drives were never touched since they were first tightly installed into the quad sata hat… 1st test yielded sustained 100mb/s raid rebuild speeds over 2hrs… after f/w update, sustained 30-40mb/s raid rebuild speeds… drives have not been touched physically since installation… so bad connection quite unlikely, or it would have failed the 1st test…

edit2: dismantled and reconnected the device as per instruction…still getting the same bad raid building speed of 10mb/s to 25mb/s… the 3 HDD is seated on SATA 1,2,4…

Hi,
After only installer 2 disks, unmount them, make update, version is correctly displayed :+1:

After shutdown my Raspberry PI and his SATA HAT for night, I’ve tried to restart : stuck : NO MORE disks visible !

I’ve wiped my sdcard to have fresh system, installed raspbian lite + OVM + HAT SATA bin + JMicron drive fix : still no disk detected (but blues lights blinking).
I’ve stop system, wipe one more time, change 2 previously disks for 2 news disks without the update : fail still no disk detected

I’m bored :frowning: and lost.

I’m sorry to hear that. What else have you done besides firmware update? Can you provide dmesg?

I used more than five boards to test the new firmware and found no problems during the test.

Nothing, Only shutdown Raspbian PI by OVM GUI for night, And replug later to discoved this issue.

After fresh wipe/installation with 1 disk only (port 4) not upgraded disk that previously working… (I’ve also tried with upgrade disk)

After 4 more format/install process, all hard drives are now visible with good serial and temp displayed under OVM (before this update, only 2). I hope final installation will be stable and I can finish parameter OVM/functionnalité to have NAS.

Hi,

Is this firmware upgrade safe or not?

From my POV add support for many disks. On my 4 disks (all WD), 2 before patch didn’t show any informations under OVM disks/SMART tabs. After patch : 4 disks returns datas and temp.
