SATA2 and SATA4 ports not working

Hi!

My SATA2 and SATA4 ports are not working.
The HDDs are not recognized.
I tried to put another HDDs which are recognized in the SATA1 and SATA3, but nothing happen.
The HDDs are okay and the two port (SATA2 and SATA4) worked yesterday.

I don’t know what is JMicron Technology Corp. / JMicron USA Technology Corp. JMS551 - Sharkoon SATA QuickPort Duo, it should be Western Digital Technologies, Inc.

What could be the problem?
@setq do you have any idea how to determine what could be the issue?

JMicron is the USB to SATA chipset on the sata hat.

Yes, I know that, but look:

https://forum.radxa.com/t/quad-sata-hat-assembly-and-troubleshooting/3879
This is not the same output (for lsusb), but when it worked before, it was the same like on the image.

Is the GPIO pin that must activate the chip active?

Yes. When I tried to activate it manually (change it to HIGH) I got a message which said it’s already in HIGH.

Ok but that’s a “logical” state.
Can you measure physically if it is?

I can’t measure it, I don’t have these equipments and skills.
But when I connect a HDD to SATA2 port, another ports blue led blink up for a half second.

And if you do a read back from the pin?

How can I do that?
Can you show me an example?

You can just use:

GPIO.input(pin-number) function to read it’s status.
You don’t need to set it up as an input.

if GPIO.input(pin_number) == LOW:
print “pin is low!”
else:
print “pin is high!”

I wrote that pseudo code into a python code (some of them copied from misc.py):

import RPi.GPIO as GPIO

GPIO.setmode(GPIO.BCM)
GPIO.setwarnings(False)
GPIO.setup(25, GPIO.OUT)
GPIO.setup(26, GPIO.OUT)

print("Pin 25 is: " + str(GPIO.input(25)))
print("Pin 26 is: " + str(GPIO.input(26)))

And I got this result:

pi@raspberry-pi-4:~ $ python3 test.py
Pin 25 is: 1
Pin 26 is: 1

1 means HIGH, so they are HIGH.

Somehow Windows could detect the USB port (the disks cannot), but it was enough to do a firmware upgrade. Now it’s working fine, but an interesting fact:

  1. lsusb:

    pi@raspberry-pi-4:~ $ lsusb
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 152d:0561 JMicron Technology Corp. / JMicron USA Technology Corp. JMS551 - Sharkoon SATA QuickPort Duo
Bus 002 Device 003: ID 152d:0561 JMicron Technology Corp. / JMicron USA Technology Corp. JMS551 - Sharkoon SATA QuickPort Duo
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 2109:3431 VIA Labs, Inc. Hub
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

I don’t know why is the name changed (I upgraded the working controller too (SATA1, SATA3)), but the chip what the QUAD SATA HAT uses is JMS561, not 551. Maybe it’s a linux thing?

I have no clue…

But glad it works for you

Okay, I finally found it out:
The default Vendor ID and Product ID is not correct (Western Digital???).
I am not sure it’s intentionally bad (and also, Product ID 0a10 doesn’t exist for Western Digital, check it out manually from the linked table later).

With the firmware upgrade under Windows you rewrite them (product and vendor ID), but the in the loaded .ini file the Product ID is still incorrect (0561).
The correct is: 1561

Finally, the correct Vendor & Product ID: 152d:1561

jms561 and jms561u are basically the same, only diffrence is 561u has clone functionality… but the nas hat doesnt take advantage of the raid hardware features though…
