Raid creation failure - hardware issues

Cleaned the USB bridge and hat with cotton swabs and alcohol. Did not resolve the problem. :frowning:

Do you have USB Male A to Male A cable?

I would have to dig through my pile of cables, but maybe. What are you wanting me to try with it?

Connect raspi and hat, then test.

I do not, but i have tried other raspberry pis. Is there any compatibility issues with particular models of hard drives and the HAT?

I think it’s the connection problem. We need to find out whether there is a problem with the connector or with hat itself.

I am 100% sure it is the hard drives i was using and a it’s a specific model.

I had 4 Seagate BarraCuda ST2000LM015. They will not work no matter what, but that is what i typically used.

I friend of mine had 4 matching hard drives of a different model. The raid worked perfectly.

As to why the Seagate BarraCuda ST2000LM015 are not supported i have no idea.

Maybe try to disable the uas module and test? If you have USB A to A cable, you can try to connects the Two USB ports to PC which powering it with the Raspberry Pi. It helps troubleshooting the issue.

Or we could buy a ST2000LM015 for testing.

I can confirm having the same issues. I have tried now with two different Quad SATA Hats and two different USB bridges. Any update on how to solve this issue? I have 4 1TB WD Red all are the same model.

I have pretty much this same issues with mine. Pretty useless big paper holder until I can solve this issue, I’m trying with four new hard drives, all the same, sata 3-4 no matter what drive I put in gets a lot of errors and disconnect. Even tried using 2 USB 3.0 male to make cables and the harddrives didn’t even was recognized.

I had issues with the occasional USB disconnect. I added quirks mode setting to /boot/cmdline.txt by following this guide: https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=245931

So far - so good.

Do t know OP but I’ve already tried every fix was mentioned in all forum posts (yes I’ve read eachone word by word) and still no luck, even I tried using 2 3.0 USB A-usb A cables and that didn’t work either

CC @setq

I am sorry for the issue you have. Can you also post the dmesg output? Is it the same as the first post in this topic? Did you try upgrade the JMS561 firmware?

i did, it worked ( the update) i made a new post for this, @setq asked for the dmesg and photos of the tophat, i send the photos, the dmesg will post it later, i have the hard drive testing ( by now there are 3 of 4 OK and passing the the extended tests…) also tested using usb 3.0 cables but i dont trust quality of those. I bought usb connectors, and will be making my own, so i ask: the usb bridge have something beside the traces connecting all 9 pins between each other?

@Alx1690
I’m sorry for the problem. Will disabling UAS help?
Refer to: https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=245931

Hi, I’m having the same problem. The raid works for about an hour and then all disks fail with error:

device descriptor read/8, error -110

Disabling UAS did not help. Already installed newest firmware. Any tips?

Edit: The problem comes from random disconnects of the drives. However, I don’t know what causes it. Here is the dmesg output:

If anyone else is having the same problem:

I replaced the power supply. Now the problems are gone. I was using the original power supply bought from radxa. Apparently the power supply does not cope well with sudden power spikes. I even re-enabled UAS without any problems.

Thanks for the update. What power supply did you replace? @unelectrically

I was using the 12v power supply from ALLNET.
