Raid creation failure - hardware issues

Ever since i received my SATA HAT i have had issues i am trying to resolve. I love the product, just can’t get it to work as intended.

Problem - Drives/Raid will never complete synchronization. They always fail early in the process. Everything else seems to work fine.

I have tried creating the raid via mdadm and Openmediavault. I have tried different power adapters that all provide enough power, different raspberry pi, different sd card, reimaged and loaded the os numerous times (rasbian). The hard drives all check out good, and i tried in both 2 and 4 drive configuration. I followed the video by Novaspirit step by step. The drives just never want to seem to cooperate with each other. The only thing i have not replaced is the HAT itself and the USB bridge.

Does anyone have any other ideas or things i can try? I’m about to give up the project. Would appreciate any help i could get.

Just to mention for extra information, I am running 4 of the exact same drive. I took it down to 2, just to test it at one point. Still had issues building the raid.

A fresh dmesg after trying to create the raid. Had to take some of the generic stuff out, so it wasn’t too long. Take note of the xHCI host controller not responding, assume dead. There is something going on or failing within the usb controller itself?

It looks like USB may have bad contact, please try to clean up the USB connector.

We have cleaned the contacts on the usb and made sure there is nothing on them. Still having issues.

Could it not be the usb bridge or the embedded connector?

Do you have any other hard drives? I saw some sector errors in dmesg.

But I still think it’s a connection problem, maybe USB or SATA.

It looks like a usb problem of raspi. Have you tried different raspi?

Tested all 4 hard drives, and even reduced. Down to two. All of them check out as good.

Tried a different raspi. Only thing I havnt replaced is the USB bridge and the sata hat itself.

@Frawtch : Do you realize that this is NOT a raspberry pi forum? This is a forum for a chinese knockoff that uses completely different hardware. You’d probably be better off using the actual raspberry pi forum for raspberry pi problems. Sounds like a kernel or distro related problem.

Actually this HAT can be attached to RPI too.

I am trying to troubleshoot the SATA HAT in the section of the forum for talking about the SATA HAT. Seems like the appropriate forum to me.

The distro or kernal is the same one all guides have instructed me to use.

It all points to some sort of SATA/USB issue consisting within the bridge or the HAT itself.

I am just hoping someone can confirm or tell me a resolution. It took me this long to troubleshoot and try all the different options/hardware, so i have surpassed my return date. Considering i have replaced everything else, i would have liked to get a replacement HAT.

I’m sorry to waste so much of your time. Our product was rigorously tested before it was shipped. I also want to find out what went wrong.

There is no problem with using two hard disks, I wonder if it is SATA1 and SATA2. Have you ever tried to use three hard drives, leave SATA4 empty.

We had tried to run with 3 and 2 drives on every SATA port (leaving each one empty and testing). No improvement in the raid failures.

Please try cleaning usb (bridge & hat) again, using cotton swabs and alcohol.
