Quad SATA Hat not detecting any HDDs

Hi, I am pretty new at operating in a linux environment, but I have been looking into setting up a Rasp Pi NAS setup for a while now.

So I have set up a 32 bit Raspberry PI OS install (was trying 64 bit before but was encountering a whole host of other issues) and the RockPi sata hat script install seems to go pretty well, but it doesnt seem that my hard drives are being detected. I have them installed in SATA1 and 2, but I have moved to other ports and not seen any changes. I have tried multiple OS installs, the first time I installed OMV and the hard drives were not identified in the GUI. Now I am just trying to get them detected through the command line.

OLED seems to work fine, and the blue activity lights are present on the board.

Below are my ls and lsusb. I will comment with dmesg

haste@piomv:~ $ ls /dev/sd
ls: cannot access ‘/dev/sd’: No such file or directory

lsusb:

haste@piomv:~ $ lsusb
Bus 002 Device 007: ID 152d:0561 JMicron Technology Corp. / JMicron USA Technology Corp. JMS551 - Sharkoon SATA QuickPort Duo
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 2109:3431 VIA Labs, Inc. Hub
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

Things I noticed here, I don’t have the western digital devices that I seem to see on the standard lsusb (like on the install thread). Also it appears the JMicron chip is a JMS551 and not a JMS561? It seems like this would limit me to SATA Gen II rather than SATA Gen 3. Wouldn’t that affect the write speeds to the hard drive?

Sorry for the massive posts already. I really appreciate the help!

Multiple errors seem like they call out that the usb cable might be bad? also it seems like it sees the hard drives, but I’m not sure why I am not able to mount them, or why ls /dev/sd doesnt identify them.

UPDATE:

I moved the drive in SATA 1 to SATA 3 and now it appears lsblk can detect both drives (drives in SATA 3 and 4 slots). However, I am getting I/O errors in dmesg. I posted just a section, because they seem like similar errors. I can post more if needed.

I have not tried installing OMV or mounting the drives since the drives have been detected in lsblk. A bit out of my element at this point.

[… Sharkoon SATA QuickPort Duo …]

As I see the USB-Bridge Adapter is not connecting very well.
In my case, it’s VERY sensitive. If I move it a little bit all of the HDDs will dropped out.

Try to pull out and plug (of course between a power off and a reboot) until:

  1. SerialNumber: RANDOM__33EEF5DA5313 can’t be RANDOM. It means there is a connection issue.
  2. usb usb2-port1: Cannot enable. Maybe the USB cable is bad? This is also means there is a connection issue.

So repeat the plug and pull out until you see kind of these messages.
And also try to clean with compressed air the USB-Bridge Adaptor.

I suggest use the lsblk command to display the devices.

I’m working on trying to get it to recognize. Seems like sda and sdb get recognized, however, the I/O errors still seem to be there. Also the serial number is still not showing up. Ill keep working at it.

What is the best way to power cycle the setup? All of my reboot commands seem to get hanged up and dont fully restart. I think its because it stays plugged into 12V line, and never powers completely off. Unfortunately that leaves me with pulling out the 12V line, but then the HDDs crash. Is there any better way to do this?

Usually if sudo reboot not working, I try with sudo poweroff, keep watching the green LED which indicates is there any working in the background. After this, I pull out the adapter, wait 5 secs, and plug it back.

It appears that the USB bridge is pretty flakey, and its intermittently identifying the hard drives. Tinkering with it hasn’t got it more reliable unfortunately. I guess my only option is to wait till they are back in stock?
