Windows 10 won't boot on Radxa X4

Hello, I’m back with some problems… As mentioned before, I’m a hardware manufacturer, and we use the Windows 10 Pro operating system on all of our devices. To install the Radxa X4 8/64GB, I’m using an image created from a Radxa that I use as a reference. However, in the last two weeks, I’ve been facing some problems. After burning the image to the EMMC and booting the board, it freezes at the Windows logo and won’t go away. I tried booting with a boot disk created through the Microsoft website with the latest version of Windows 10, and the same thing happens. I then tried Windows 11, and I was able to boot, but when it lists the devices for installation, the EMMC doesn’t appear. I don’t know what else to do. I updated the BIOS to v007, hoping to solve the problem, but nothing happened. The EMMC appears normally in the BIOS, but it won’t boot.

I have already done this installation procedure through image on at least 20 boards, but on 3 so far I have this problem of not initializing…

Are you meaning that the same boot disk and the same steps work fine on 17 boards, but the EMMC module isn’t recognized when installed on 3pcs boards?
Could you check if the EMMC modules on these 3pcs boards are different from the other 17 boards?
Or you can try other Linux distributions to check if they can install the system to eMMC normally.

Indeed, on the three boards I encountered the problem, the EMMC code is the same (KLMCG4JETD), unlike the others that worked perfectly, these have the code (KLMCG2UCTB).
I also ran another test and tried installing Linux on these boards with the code (KLMCG4JETD) and was able to install normally. After installing Linux, I tried installing Windows from a disk created directly from Microsoft, and again, it couldn’t even find the EMMC during the installation to create the partitions. Based on these tests, I believe this EMMC only works with Linux (I’d never heard of this). The equipment I use is Windows-based, so Linux isn’t possible… How do I solve this problem with the three boards where I can’t install Windows?

Hello. I have the same problem with a new batch of three X4s. They all cannot recognize the EMMC or NVME when installing Windows (i tried W10 22H2 and newest W11 25H2, fresh download and an older one)
We had an older batch from 2024 and these worked without issue with the same installation media.

What i tried:
Updated BIOS to 007
Tried to install from all USB ports (windows thumb drive
Installed 256G NVME
Enable CSM in Bios
Reset Bios to factory default
Removed CMOS Battery

During windows install i tried to load Intel_ISH_Driver drivers and VMD.
Nothing changed

Any help would be appreciated.

Ok. This one is not easy to find out and i have only tried by coincidence.
So in case someone else will have this problem:
Make the bootable windows media with the media creation tool.
Writing the Windows iso to an USB-Drive will give this error.

NVME can not recognized? which model? we never met this issue before
Could u check the each one emmc silkscreen, we believe this issue is related to the emmc model

Hello Ryan, the NVMe is detected now as well.
Using the Windows.iso downloaded with Media Creation Tool 22h2 and written to a USB drive, Windows Installer will not detect EMMC and NVMe on the X4.
If you create a USB drive with Media Creation Tool directly - it works

Your representative here in Brazil, the company Mytec, provided 128GB NVMe 2230 Gen4x4 drives to be installed on the boards that presented problems. Since we sent the boards to them, we were informed that they performed tests and, with the NVMe installation, the Windows installation problem was resolved. However, when we received the boards, I tried to install Windows 10 22H2 and the installation doesn’t happen; it freezes on the screen showing the Windows 10 logo. When I contacted Mytec, they informed me that all tests were done using Windows 11 25H2. I tested with Windows 11 and was able to install normally, but I can’t install Windows 10. The equipment I manufacture and use, the Radxa X4, is based on Windows 10, including my application that runs on the equipment. I’ve tried every way to prioritize NVMe booting in BIOS V007, but it seems to be somehow prioritizing eMMC and freezing at the same point as before. The Chipset tab in the BIOS is empty, and I believe there should be an option to actually disable eMMC there… Could you help me with this?

It is indeed possible to disable eMMC in the BIOS. Press Ctrl+U to open the hidden options, and then in Chipset–PCIO–SCSConfig, disable eMMC 5.1 controller.

When you disable eMMC in the BIOS, you need to use BIOS version v004.

Regarding the Windows 10 installation issue, are you using the official Microsoft Windows 10? Or try a different brand of NVMe.

I’m going to downgrade the BIOS version to test it.
I’m using the official Windows 10 22H2 version, created directly from the Microsoft tool. New NVMe drives should arrive today for me to test.
For now, thank you very much for your help. As soon as I test the other NVMe drives, I’ll come back here to give you an update.

I made changes to the BIOS V007 and managed to disable the eMMC on the chipset, and finally managed to install Windows 10 22H2 on the NVMe drive… However, I’m now concerned about what I reported in the post ( Radxa X4 won't boot after power outage ). As instructed, I installed a key so that the user can reset the BIOS and thus get the equipment to start normally after a sudden power outage. However, when they do this procedure, the eMMC problem returns, since the eMMC is enabled automatically… Is there any way to disable the eMMC by default so that even after resetting the BIOS, the eMMC is not enabled?

Disabling eMMC by default requires BIOS customization. You can try completely erasing all eMMC partitions and data to see if NVMe boots normally.

I removed the eMMC partition through AndroidOS, and even so, if I leave eMMC enabled in the Chipset settings, the NVMe drive cannot boot. It only boots normally if I disable eMMC in the Chipset settings…
Is there any way to customize a BIOS version for these 3 specific cases? Because I’m having problems delivering my equipment, since I can’t send the equipment with this problem…
