What do we want in the next Rock Pi?

Is the GPU similarly faster?

@Larry, oh come on, plz, use google. OP1 is rk3399 that were selected based on chip quality by google. Thatā€™s all. That was done for re-branding RK for better sale of Chromebooks. First google link explain it in details.

@Jack will the new form-factor boards accept dumb 12V power over type C, like RockPi4?

Will RK3588 board have the same form factor, or is it too early to talk about that?

3588ā€¦eh he would be so helpful for 10gbe sata NASā€¦ And if rockchip fixed their pcie root, maybe even for nvme nas

@Jack what are the dimensions, even if approximate, of the new form-factor?

100*75, standard 2.5inch SBC size.

Will there be a RK3566 sbc from Radxa with a roughly 85mm x 54mm form factor?

No. RK3566 is not our choice. RK3568 will be our choice, itā€™s called ROCK 3 Model A:

Everything we have on ROCK Pi 4 are on ROCK 3, including:

  • RK3568
  • PD/QC support
  • Double layer USB3, upper OTG, Double layer USB2
  • M.2 M Key for SSD, PCIe 3.0 x2 lanes
  • eMMC module
  • GbE with PoE
  • MIPI CSI&DSI
  • exact ROCK Pi 4 form factor

The difference from ROCK Pi 4:

  • No on board wifi/bt module, we use M.2 E Key instead with PCIe 2.0 and SDIO, so that you can just plug the Intel AX200 WiFi 6 or use Radxa Wireless Module for WiFi 4.

If you could include support for the AX210 as well, that would be great.

Jack, will the coming Rock 3 Model A have two M.2 Keys, with one for WiFi and Bluetooth, and the other for a SSD?

When can we expect to purchase this board?

Does the RK3568 benchmark with better performance than the RK3566?

Yes, exactly.

The sample is working now. We expect MP in Sep. Before that, there will be beta hw for developers.

It seems the RK3568 has faster dram controller but maybe just software limitation for RK3566. RK3568 has more interfaces we need, two native USB3, PCIe 3.0 + PCIe 2.0. It meets our feature requests for ROCK3.

We will check if WiFi 6E requires newer kernel version, currently we are running 4.19.

As long the board supports the card :white_check_mark: can always get mainline running. The n10 is getting closerā€¦. Still challenge with getting the NPU and mainline uboot / DTB to be friendsā€¦.

Interesting, rk3566/3568 already have mainline kernel running with patches which will be upstreamed soon, hard work done by Collabora team and Peter.

If samples are ready then please send to them or DM me for further details.

Will the RK3568 run cool enough to operate without the need for a massive heat sink or a fan?

Normal running is cool, but long time full load, a heatsink is a must.

@Jack what height are we looking at, together with heatsink? will a tiny heatsink + blower fan right on top of it suffice, for low-height application with high loads in mind?

Iā€™m a big fan of the rock pi 4 with penta SATA hat, but it could be a bit more convenient. The 12v DC power jack is basically impossible to find a good cable to. The only choice so far is a desktop PSU or powering the rockpi the normal way and being limited to only 20W for the disks. The SATA hat has this connection and the HDD bay has two of those (see image). For me it would be perfect if the HDD bay and the SATA hat had a more accessible power plug. Iā€™d be willing to pay ā‚¬250-350 for a total rock pi + SATA hat + drive bay combination.

Itā€™s called molex and there is enought non-custom made PSU for this. For example

On american amazon sure, but if you donā€™t live in america it is not so easy to find. Hardly any shop here sells that and if they do itā€™s only the 2A one. Thatā€™s not enough if you want to run 4 3.5" HDDs. Anyway, my point is not that it doesnā€™t exist, but that it would be nice to have something more common.
