[Quad Sata Kit] SATA issues on 2/4 slots

Hello,

I am facing SATA issues on 2 of the 4 slots on my Quad Sata Kit. The first and third slot (sda and sdc) end up using an incredibly old SATA version and throw errors. They’re missing a lot of features that make me not want to use them (TRIM for example).

Other issues are that at random disks give a red LED eventhough they can write data just fine. After a reboot the red LED goes away. Happened 4x on disk 1, 1, 3 and 4.

Things I have tried are:

  • Ubuntu 20.04
  • Raspbian Buster
  • 4x Samsung 850 Pro 1TB SSD
  • 4x Intel DC S3520 240GB SSD
  • A mix of the two types of SSDs

At first I ran Ubuntu 20.04. I have also installed a fresh up-to-date Raspbian Buster on my rpi4 and did nothing else but run the installation script.

I have spent 4 hours debugging with Norbert

Hello daniel,

The JMS561 does not support TRIM, which is not determined by the firmware.

In addition, sda and sdb use the same JMS561, sdc and sdd use the same JMS561.

The red light is an error light. An error may have occurred while reading or writing.

Thanks for the quick reply

Can you explain why the featureset/ata version for sda/sdc are different from sdb/sdd?

Maybe there is something wrong with the firmware.

I will try to burn different firmware to test.

I’ll let you know if there’s any progress.

Hey setq,

It’s been 3.5 weeks so far. Has there been any progress? Is there anything I can do to help?

I tested several firmware, one of which enabled sda and sdc to have the same firmware.

But I only had one board at that time, the test showed some instability, I will take a new board to test again in the next two days.

I found two firmware that are available, both of which are not perfect, but can solve some of the problems with the current firmware.

I will write down the detailed method tomorrow.

Hey setq

any updates?

@daniel
I’m sorry for the delay. Please check out this post How to upgrade F/W with jms561 under Raspberry Pi

Hi! I have this problem to! I already upgrade FW, but first slot have issue(SATA1), second is good(SATA2). I have only two disks. Any ideas?

Check disks via lsblk or OMV?

Disks work fine. I try LVM - speed of R|W good, but spin dont wanna sleep never. After that i check smart.

Try using hdparm -S to set the standby timeout.

Ok i will, but what to do with smart issue with SATA? Or this is fine?
I will set APM on first disk like on second - 128:

pi@nas:~/jms561-fw-update $ sudo hdparm -I /dev/sda | grep level

pi@nas:~/jms561-fw-update $ sudo hdparm -I /dev/sdb | grep level

pi@nas:~/jms561-fw-update $ sudo hdparm -B 128 /dev/sda

Any idea of sata issue? I try change slots, but nothing change. Try to replace sda with sdb - steel nothing.
I need wait for new FW from you or…?

It doesn’t matter. Just ignore it.

The firmware doesn’t read or allow smartctl to trigger self tests or extended test on the hdd… shows as missing ata info… but reading attributes are fine…

Hdparm will not work… u have to use the firmware update tool and set “-t 120” flag for 120min delay before spindown…
