ISSUE - Adding SSD or HDD on USB2 port

Hi,

I’m trying to add a disk for my OS (database, Zabbix server-agent, Minecraft server and all others applications) to avoid always use MicroSD. NOT FOR BOOTING like Raspbian beta’s (not my goal for now)

I’ve bought external enclosue USB-3 : POSUGEAR USB 3.0 (https://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B077XVTTJC/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

I’ve SSD (older) Kingston ssdNow! V serie 64Gb (+5.0V - 0.9A).
I’ve HDD (older) Seagate Pipeline HD Mini 250Gb +5V - 0.451A).

When I’m plugin enclose with SSD or HDD on USB2 port : disk is visible under Disks or FileSystem or SMART menu’s of OpenMediaVault. Disks are also visible by hdparm (-I or -B). Also visible un /dev/sd*. It’s fine.

After,in FileSystem menu, if I’m selecting MOUNT and validate all parameters, system still running but
after 20 seconds : disks no longer visible detected (hdparm or /dev/ or OMV). Only way to retrieve is to unplug/plug disk from USB ports.

I’ve tried to plug USB key : no issue. :+1:

Anyone have idea :question: I’m in doubt but look like issue with power (but 'm not electronic/electrical expert).

@setq you’re feedback ?

Regards.

I looked into running an external HDD on my RPI. The general consensus I found is that the RPI cannot supply enough power to run a HDD over USB.

I’d recommend getting an external enclosure that has an external power source. This isolates the USB for I/O only.

It sounds like a current issue to me. What else do you have connected on your 5v? If you’re already running 4 drives + Fans with the SATA HAT then adding the additional external drive is probably putting you over the edge. An enclosure with external power source should solve the issue.

Yes SATA HAT + 4x2.5hdd i’m thinking also ti’s power issue :slight_smile: I will bought another enclosure (mandatory for next Raspbian OS SSD/HDD boot.
