Introduce ROCK 5B - ARM Desktop level SBC

Given the above, you might want to look at the Rockchip RK3588 based Mini-ITX motherboard “ITX3588J” in the first place…

I bought an R3 code for 8gb version, Rock 5B seems promising, I hope to have it soon.
I read whole topic and I can say this board will have lots of support because it is a strong SBC and deserves support.

Linux firmware build is not an issue, there are many options to build Debian / Ubuntu / Slackware / Fedora / Arch / Manjaro etc image. I build many for GT King&Pro tv box, and I can build for Rock 5B too. I’m sure @spikerguy will build a clean and stable Manjaro firmware for Rock 5B he is a good developer.

I hope Rock5B to have suport from FreeBSD & Opensense and I hope @SleepWalker to help us.
This device will be my first Raxda board and I’m really curious about it.

I guess Linux Mainline Kernel developers will add support for RK3588 soon.
Mesa 3d driver development is already in progress.

In my opinion there is nothing to be worried, especially about Linux Firmware…

I would say there is nothing to worry about as eventually its likely but for those that purchase this time Radxa is trail blazing with this board Mesa goes ahead anyway but unlike recent releases where others had already some some work this time currently Radxa are alone so likely we will be part of the dev cycle and for some that will feel very slow.
The Mainline Kernel developers will add support when they get a board which I think will be at the same time we will and it could take time whilst there is an Android image to play with.
Currently no one is working on the RK3588 whilst say the 1st entries for RK3568 in mainline was 2021-03-21 and if anyone is working on it they are still to make an entry.

There is no worry its just making clear to some this great piece of hardware is still a working dev project in terms of firmware.
Things with Rockchip like Mali have become more incremental and the RK3588 is not the same but certain elements will be incremental from work with the RK356x prob I am thinking.

All I am saying is it could be anything up to a year before complete firmware support where all is 100% and finished.

Sorry, I’m in China Mainland, but I ordered the R3 code in this website. Would I buy it with the R3 Code directly?

Welcome to Radxa forum @darkstar

Happy to see you here.

I don’t get your question. R3 code is to make sure you can buy ROCK5B in time.

Are there any plans to release passive heat sinks that could be bought as well?

It would be super cool to have a aluminum heat sink that was 100mmx90ish so you could go fanless.

I’m guessing it would require some machining or a vapor-chamber/heatpipe for board clearance though.

Hello, I have a question about the R3 code, I am interested in getting a Rock 5 Model B. However, I haven’t decided whether I should get a 4gb or 8gb version, would it be possible to change my option when the rock 5 becomes available if I purchase an R3 code with 4gb model in allnet?

yes, it’s possible to choose which ram version when we start shipping. I suggest choosing 8GB.

Is there an initial cost estimate for the 8GB Rock5 B?

For comparison, Pine has just announced their RK3588 based QuartzPro64, and they have stated that it will cost north of $300 US.

They also had normal prices in the shop even if none avail.

You do understand that the cost is specified in first post?

Thanks for the reply! Just pre-ordered my 8gb, can’t wait to see it!

2-lanes mipi is a shame for such a powerful device. 4-lanes MIPI DSI and 4-lanes MIPI CSI for 5B.
