In hope this helps everyone like it does to me so here goes some tips.

A bit in respect of Armbian 💸

The controversial phenomenon.

The controversy around Armbian is nothing but the open-source financial cliché that most developers face in order to pursue bigger goals in achieving the happiness of others. You will often see requests for donations and developers’ grey hairs in their attempts to make us understand that the reward per demand is sometimes neither fair nor feasible.


🔌Things to consider

Sometimes reboot will not work and if in due update it will brick… I suggest that you opt by doing shutdown and then start the system again for safety.

  • RK3588 Type C DP requires hot-unplug/hot-plug.
  • Armbian do set the system to automatic login.
  • The system runs better on Wayland.
  • Cloud Gaming is amazing on these boards.
  • Steam with the @Ptitseb master box64/box86 works.
  • Talented Armbian users keep supporting:
    – Kernel updates / GPU and HW Acceleration / Chromium Browser integrations at bay.
  • The Armbian framework is by far the most atractive for many developers to learn and support their projects on ARM.

📱Bluetooth options

A8 Module Bluetooth:

then add these lines somewhere (at the bottom of the file is fine):

Then press Ctrl+X, then Y.

To become certified with access to the play store you have to:
1 - Install a device ID apk to get this Device ID and register it on your google account.
2 - Register it here: https://www.google.com/android/uncertified/
3 - Restart Malior-Droid again and add your google account manually on settings.
4 - Send apkpure the emulator window and start installing apps like a boss !

Had rock 5b brick also recently. Just wanted to confirm, it happens during reboot only? mine did after an update (and possibly a reboot).

yeah pretty much it… don’t do restarts… just shutdown and cut power and power on. That’s how I have been playing around.

Thanks for this post (and the afterburner image post). It really is the fastest way to get the rock5b up and running with acceptable performance and stability.
I have been running this setup now with nvme and the A8 for over a month as a daily work desktop and is very impressed by how capable it is even in this early stage of development.
The only problem I have encountered is some random dns/resolv problem which there migth be a fix for here:

The link has no information about Windows 7. The link is to an (unofficial) ARM64 port of Proxmox VE, which, by itself, is a purpose built Linux distribution with web enabled access to LXC and KVM. LXC only supports Linux guests and KVM supports virtualization of underlying hardware, ARM64, in this case. Hence, in theory Windows 7, which has no ARM port, should not work as guest; at least not virtualized (QEMU emulated should work, albeit with poor performance)

While from the screen grab the KVM tunable flag seems turned on, the flag is probably getting ignored. While KVM can filter some CPU features, architecture of host and guest must be the same for virtualization to work. This is (non-KVM) emulation, instead

Is it possible to flash direkt to NVMe. openFyde is booting correct after flashing zu NVMe via balenaEtcher. When flashing Armbian_23.8.1_Rock-5b_jammy_legacy_5.10.160.img the Rock 5b doesn’t boot.

It is but requires you to flash the spi first for that to work. So I best suggest u not to and to flash your emmc then yes move files to nvme.

I flashed the SPI with maskrom mode and an external computer already to boot fydeOS from it. But armbian doesn’t boot. Can you explain what you mean exactly?

edit: I missed that I need another SPI image (armbian version). Thanks for the advice @DarkevilPT

Likely its not bricked its the PD power loop and its never booting root, I have fallen foul of it so many times I don’t use PD and just have a 12v usb-c barrel connector.

Also to anyone as does anyone know what the time base is of /sys/class/pwm/pwmchip2/pwm0/period is?

I am presuming milisecs… just checking as usually fans are 20-25Khz just above hearing range

I did a bash script but been wondering what the time base really is for period?
Anyway much prefer the GPIO fans as you can PWM a brushless 2 pin fan but they are not really wired up that way.

I am not that keen on armbian as its always seems to come preinstalled with user side scripts.
I prefer vanilla apart from tweaks needed under the hood so why I prefer.

As sticks to rk3588 for a large nunber of boards and also has mainline and are closer to the original distro of Ubuntu but no Debian.

Do you have any idea how much work will be involved to add support for the 5B+. I just bought one and without Armbian and the hardware acceleration patches it’s basically unusable for me. I’m really hoping it will be possible to get it working the same for the 5B+ otherwise I’ll need to sell it and buy an older 5B…

Not that much, really. It’s basically just a matter of copying the device tree from Radxa’s repository, and adding a board config for the build. Hardly a couple hours’ worth of work, yet it’s unverifiable without having the hardware on hand, or a very impatient volunteer willing to help (wink-wink).
