After apt upgrade the screen gui doesnt start

The original debian image works well but after apt update / apt upgrade the screen no longer gets any signal.

I see this in the .xsessions-errors file

Could this cause my black screen?

It would be nice if Radxa finally released a distro with an updated freaking certificate so that people stop asking the same question every day

The cause of your issue is that Radxa did not care enough to keep a certificate in a release up to date (literally a 5 minute fix) and your upgrade did not complete. You can find how to get the certificate in other topics

I did fix the certificate problem with apt.radxa.com so that all steps of the apt update was passing, so I unfortunately do not see that that could be my issue.

I was using a rather old screen using a dvi to hdmi adapter, and now i tested with a newer screen and it lights up.

Perhaps the default screen frequency was increased after the debian update and the old screen couldnt handle it

Ah yes, I guess people also had trouble with HDMI to DVI. Which, also, should not be happening in principle (and even worse if they break working displays)…

No, the problem is present also with HDMI to HDMI.

I have now tested the following

  • Radxa debian build from 2022-10 with kernel 5.10.66 first boot - Screen is ok
  • Radxa debian build from 2022-10 with kernel 5.10.110 after apt update && apt upgrade - Screen is black
  • Armbian build 22.11.1 Debian with kernel 5.10.72 - Screen is ok
  • Armbian build 22.11.1 Jammy with kernel 5.10.72 - Screen is ok
  • Armbian build 22.11.2 Jammy with kernel 5.10.110 - Screen is black

To me it looks like something has become worse between kernel versions 5.10.72 1nd 5.10.110
I can also send armbian-hardware-monitor.log or other log files from the different boot scenarios if that helps.

The screen is capable of 1920x1080

I just noticed that if I boot up Ubuntu with two screens, the GUI thinks that the two screens are connected, but my older Benq screen is still black.

I can change the resolution of it but no matter which resolution I select, it is still black.
The primary screen (Dell 2722) works fine.

The same for ubuntu also for me, the same with last armbian also for me.
As you I think this is a software problem and not PD problem as someone tells; the system is up and running, no boot loop, the ssh is working and the ping is stable.
I bought two PD, one ugreen (65W), one samsung (45W) suggested by someone, and no way with both

You’re right. This is not related to the power PD issue.

I’m running on a 100 W USB-PD unit now and since I started with that no reboots.
45W sould also be ok. I have measured the power and it rarely goes over 8-9W when I have checked, but with a 10W USB-PD unit it rebooted frequently.
I seem to be lucky enough that my unit works ok with USB-PD power.

I cannot understand how other people do not track this issue, I have 3 PD, same results (one of them is the official one).

They are probably lucky enough that their screens happen to work despite this bug.

It’ll be interesting if we find out what is the difference between working screens and non-working screens when it’s been found.

@ac8085 do you have another screen or a TV that you have tried with?

no I haven’t, I have only a classic asus hdmi monitor 1080p
but as I wrote before I’m pretty sure that the hardware is not the problem

No your screen is fine.

As I mentioned earler I have a screen that works just fine with 5.10.66 and 5.10.72 based builds, but I have not been able to get it to light up with any 5.10.110 based build (Armbian, Debian, or other sources).
I can even see that the EDID negotiation works ok in one of the log files (dont have the name in front of me now) if I ssh into the computer or use a second screen.

My newer Dell screen works with all the 5.10 based kernels I’ve tried, but not with any 6.x kernels.

I think that this is unacceptable, it cannot be reduced to a matter of luck.

Here is the output from xrandr --verbose with my two screens connected.

HDMI-1 is the screen thats always black, and HDMI-2 is working.

@ac8085 you can try this 6.2 build, it lights up both my screens.

https://github.com/armbian/os/releases/download/23.05.0.0070/Armbian_23.05.0.0070_Rock-5b_lunar_midstream_6.2.0-rc1_minimal.img.xz

I’ve experienced the same video issues. First blaming on PS, I’ve tried several with no success. I tried the 23.05.0.0070 Armbian image, fails to boot, indicates a missing UUID. Same with the current 23.05.0.0078 image.

Seeing this thread, sounds similar. In my case, initial boot is fine in Armbian or Ubuntu server. Install Ubuntu desktop, no video, ssh is fine. I realized that the issue is not with X, happens in the initial apt update && apt upgrade. I usually don’t reboot after that, just install the desktop.

I am running a 1650x1080 monitor, I have 2 Dell (228, 2210), same result. I try on my 2k desktop monitor, same results.I’ve seen another thread that for 2k monitor support, must generate a template. Indications are 1920x1200 is the same. I will roll back to Ubuntu server and give that a try. Unfortunately, I don’t have a 1080p monitor unless I “borrow” my wife or daughter’s monitors. They would not be pleased. I can see the monitor detection and supported mode list, just can’t “light up”.

Puzzled by this issue, I’ve used Rasbian and Ubuntu for years on Raspberry Pi. Other than the occasional config file change, never a monitor detection issue. Starting with Ubuntu server then loading a desktop has been my daily driver for decades, just works. Even if after a drive failure, I decided to go with a very glitchy Ubuntu 22.04.0 rev. A few days to work out kinks, after 22.04.2, a rock. Never used a Mali GPU, something with the drivers??? That a console upgrade, pre-X11 is knocking out the display is unusual.

I’ve scripted many of the install steps. Comes from being an Automator by trader…

I too have this exact issue, tried all the noob things to get it to work.
I have a 1650x1080 Dell monitor using HDMI to DVI-D, no issue at all then as soon as something is updated it all over. Android on it runs fine.
