Writing to eMMC

Just wondering why when writing to eMMC you need to use rkdeveloptool?

Is it not possbile to just use dd? Or does this have some detrimental affect to the eMMC chip?

You can just use dd. rkdeveloptool is for “dd over usb otg from PC”.
