UART_2 on Radxa Zero 3W

Greeting

On RADXA Zero 3W eMMC 16GB we want to use UART_2 (CON1, pins 8 and 10) to communicate with an external device.
According to the documentation at UART Serial Console | Radxa Docs it is possible.

But despite all attempts, I was unable to free UART_2 from the serial console function on various versions of Linux:

  • Armbian_community_25.11.0-trunk.302_Radxa-zero3_trixie_vendor_6.1.115_minimal,
  • DietPi_RadxaZERO3-ARMv8-Bookworm
  • radxa-zero3_debian_bullseye_xfce_b6

The furthest I got was only one (!) successful test:

  • printf “The quick brown fox jumps over lazy dog.\r” > /dev/ttyS1 (an oscilloscope was connected to CON1/pin8).

The second and subsequent sendings were unsuccessful!
When rebooting Linux, the traffic on CON1/pin8 is clearly visible!

Does anyone have an idea or advice:

  • How to free UART_2 from the console function?
  • Assign UART_2 to user function?
  • Which non-dedicated Linux is suitable for this task?

Any idea is welcome.
With respect, greetings from Željko

PS: I used the advices of AI but they all ended without results!
Therefore, I kindly ask for advice from someone who has had this kind of implementation of UART_2 work in practice and on which Linux for RADXA does it work?
I wonder if this kind of application is even possible because UART_2 works as debug console?

There are a few things to fix / change to use UART_2.

See this link for Radxa OS.

DietPi / Armbian didn’t have working overlays for UART last time I tried them, so even if you do overcome the UBOOT issue, you won’t get much further.
