how to upgrade with hold kernel?

I have the same issue, using a ROCK PI S v1.2 256MB

Ubuntu Bionic and Debian Buster won’t boot,
Debian Stretch works fine until you do an apt-get upgrade. It doesn’t seem to boot with the latest kernel.
When it is booting up you can tell it to boot from the old kernel by pressing 2 when prompted then edit /boot/extlinux/extlinux.conf to remove the entry for the new kernel.

Also the Armbian distro’s will not start up. Slarm64 works fine
