ROCK 5A 16GB stuck in Maskrom – bootloader download fails

Hello,

I have a Radxa ROCK 5A 16GB (SKU 2573560, MPN RS120-D16P1) which does not boot.

Symptoms:

  • Green power LED is on, RK3588S becomes slightly warm, but there is no HDMI output.

  • It does not boot from eMMC.

  • It also does not boot from a freshly written microSD card with eMMC removed.

  • The board is detected in Maskrom mode:

DevNo=1 Vid=0x2207,Pid=0x350b,LocationID=1402 Maskrom

However, loading the bootloader always fails.

On Windows with RKDevTool 2.96:

Download Boot Start
Download Boot Fail
Note: please check ddr, please reset device and retry

On an Intel Mac with rkdeveloptool:

Downloading bootloader...
Downloading bootloader failed!

I tested both rk3588_spl_loader_v1.15.113.bin and MiniLoader, different USB cables, and tested with and without eMMC. The result is the same.

One unusual detail: USB-A alone does not cold-start the board. After applying USB-C power it appears in Maskrom. USB-C can then be disconnected and the board remains powered through USB-A.

Since the BootROM works but the loader cannot be started, could this indicate a DDR, DDR power, PMIC/power sequencing, or other hardware problem?

Are there any recommended test points/voltages or other hardware diagnostics for this failure?

I have several ROCK 5A boards available for comparison.

Thanks!

maybe another manifestation of A7z quality control issues ?

Can you try this loader? https://dl.radxa.com/rockchip/loaders/rk3588/rk3588_spl_loader_v1.22.114.bin
