Rock 5 Model B: System freeze during USB boot with Fedora 40

Hey Guys…

I am experiencing a frustrating issue with my Rock 5 Model B board when trying to boot Fedora 40 from USB. The bootloader (U-Boot SPL) starts okay, but the system consistently freezes right after “Starting kernel…” , with no further console output or fan activity.

Here is what I have tried so far:

  1. Verified USB image integrity with SHA256 and resin .io
  2. Used two different USB flash drives (SanDisk & Kingston)
  3. Swapped power supplies (stock 5 V/3 A vs. 5 V/4 A)
  4. Ensured SD card is removed, no conflicting devices plugged
  5. Tried alternative OS (Debian Bookworm) — that boots fine

I also check this : Rock 5 Model B Unable to boot from M.2 NVMe okta training in chennai My boot log cycles through probing devices, then abruptly halts at kernel start. Seems specific to Fedora 40 + USB boot combination.

Questions:

  • Has anyone seen a similar freeze at the kernel launch stage?
  • Are there known Fedora config tweaks or U-Boot flags needed for the Rock 5 USB path?
  • Would using U-Boot from buildroot or a later mainline version help?

Thank you so much!
