RAID 10 slow write speed

I have set up the Quad Sata Hat with 4 x 2TB disks in RAID 10.

Before I create RAID 10 I have tested it by transfering large files to each one of the disks over Gbps Ethernet and I always got write/read speads between 90-100MB/s

Once I have set up the RAID 10 the writes of large files are not constant anymore. A large file that took a few seconds for the single disk in RAID 10 takes minutes. The write speed spikes from a few KB/s to 50MB/s all the time with no constant write spead.

The read speeds are fast though between 90-100MB/s.

Any idea why these spikes and slow write speeds and how to fix this?

RAID10 performance is lower than a single disk, which is normal.

OK but why the transfer spikes all the time between a few KB/s and MB/s?

Sometime it hangs completely and continues after 10 or more seconds.

Does it hang on continuous writes, or does it hang on initial?

You can check dmesg when it hangs.

Hi. I removed the RAID and I set up the Disks as single again. I tried to copy a file less than 1.5GB and I got a 60MB/s write speed. For a 4GB file I got 29MB/s. Are these write speeds normal?

My quad sata hat has been replaced because two of the sata slots didn’t work (see my post here). At least with the old quad sata hat I could get more than 80MB/s in the working sata slots with single disks.

Maybe this is a problem with the new quad sata hat I received?

Maybe we need to look at dmesg first.
