the Main page of the CM3 wiki ( https://wiki.radxa.com/Rock3/CM ) says that there is an onboard wifi antenna, as well as the external connector. without an external antenna connected, the wifi reception is very weak. is there a device tree overlay or parameter that needs to be enabled to use the onboard antenna, like on the raspberry pi CM4, or does the onboard antenna even exist?

The CM3 only supports external antenna. The wiki page was wrong and it’s corrected now. You can use antenna like this:
