No, in First time after i bought rock5b i use 25w QC 3.0 good quality Here in Germany (old Handy charger) , than i buy Samsung EVO 830 1tb nvme.
Then this not Work after 3 weeks i bought again a good quality 45w (Germany good standard) and it runs several month uses nvme in openmediavault until i flash uefi and then Back to original Bootloader.
Maybe it seems that any Thing has changed in U-Boot or the Kernel to determine the powersupply.
I wait now to Receiver the original Power supply. It Looks perhaps that the high current Modes in First 20w charger was damaged through nvme.
Fair enough but none of these sound like they are dumb power supplies (maybe the 45W one?)
What I am observing is more and more topics where people report problems with their NVMEs after some update. This is quite concerning. I wouldn’t recommend using Radxa builds of linux for now.
thank you for your hint. How can I connect a dumb 12 V x 2.5 A = 30 W power supply to the Rock 5b. Usually these USB-C plugs have some kind of chip or at least a resistor. Which dumb USB-C cable/adaptor should I buy? Is it save to power the Rock 5b with 12 Volts without any kind of negotiation? I don’t want to destroy it.
I dont know where is the hint, i used several 20-30€ Power supplys.
In First use My nvme Samsung evo was not detected anymore after 8 Weeks working. So i bought a new PD supply (No PD cable) and the nvme is again working.
In Second, i flashed a new Bootloader and Original Back, nvme was again Not detected. (Tested on 3 different Sd with fresh Install radxa and armbian)… Not working.
In Third, i bought the original pd supply and emmc. Nvme was Not detected in this Case with new flashed radxa and armbian Images in SD.
In fourth, i flashed armbian on emmc. And all 3 Power supply working with detected nvme.
In every step i used the Same Bootloader and Images since the second step. Flashed with Rufus and dd twice.
It’s completely fine to use a power supply without any negotiation. Rock 5B accepts anything up to 19V I think but I never tried power supplies above 12 volt. Just get a barrel to USB-C converter. Rock5 will then just recognize 12 volts and not do any negotiation.
Don’t be worried of fixed 12V. It just works. I use the 12V DC output from my monitor dedicated for powering the soundbar and the DIY barrel to USB-C adapter. Works without any issues. Both NVMe and EMMC installed and working.
I bought a dumb 12 V/30 W power supply and a barrel-to-USB C adapter on eBay. Model Chicony from DELL. My Rock 5b runs stable since then. The GPU doesn’t crash any more. The power hungry M.2-SSD works fine.
