Wow, I just saw the new version of Rock 5B+.
USB-C in the front instead of Mini HDMI is a cool upgrade and LPDDR5 instead of LPDDR4X. Does it work in dual-channel?
But why is there no support for 4K 120Hz? Is this a limitation of the video chip? Will the next version 6 have a more powerful video chip with support for 4K 120Hz?
Also, for some reason the power and reset buttons have not been improved, although people complained that they have to use toothpicks and matches to turn it on in a fanless case.
And the question is, will the funless case be updated for USB-C in the front or will it be necessary to cobble together a plastic insert from the old revision? Four USB-A ports on the back seem like too many to me, it would be better if one or two of them had a Type-C connector.
New version of Rock 5B+
Mini HDMI was replaced by full size HDMI on side, usb-c pd power and DP was splitter into two separate ports (one in place of 5B mini HDMI input)
While of course I prefer full size HDMI and don’t use that much HDMI input… but spitting those for two connectors result in obvious downgrade - You can’t connect 5B+ by single usb-c cable to modern monitors that provide both power and dp signal.
And this one still is not well supported so there is no speed improvement with this
Maybe this will change in future, so far it’s not faster.
With next flagship rockchip we will see
I coudn’t find any information that 4k 120hz is no longer supported. On arace 4k60 is mentioned but for RX. Where is that info from?
Edit: And for dp port. But HDMI should still be able to do 4k at 120hz.
The specification says 4Kp60
If this is not the case, then I would like to see it amended to be 100% sure.
Thank you, I didn’t know that USB-C is split into two, I thought it was just a new USB-C, which would be great for VR glasses. But the fact that, as you say, you can’t now do video and power + data transmission via one cable is very bad, I would like this feature to return.
I saw an HDMI input on the side, a large connector is much better for me than a small one. But what will happen to the fanless case now, will the manufacturer cut a hole in this case on the side for this HDMI? I think it will not be beautiful and will ruin the case, I would prefer it to just stay inside the case, I don’t need it.
There are some issues when using usb-c as DP and power input, for example someone want to use adb tools and have to connect to the PC USB A Port, but the PC USB-A Port is not enough to power the board , so we split it.
Actually you can.
The vertical USB C at the rear side is for power only. The USB C at front is a full function USB C with DP, you can connect your VR glass to this USB C port.
If you want power input + display + usb, you can plug it to the front USB C, it will work just like the only USB C on ROCK 5B(same picking PD power supply issue).
So basically old usb-c/dp was just moved?
You can say that but the implementation is totally different because once you have 2 USB C, a lot of troubles come, such as:
- what if two USB C are plugged in at the same time?
- Plug in order?
- which is power input and which is power output?
- do we need to output power from the other port if one port is power in?
I guess that the one labelled as input have highest priority and if connected it should be the only one power input?
BTW: I could not find any info on specs for 5B+ that moved port can also power in device so one wire setup is possible, that’s why I assumed that it’s just divided into two ports.
But the monitor connection wires should be at the back, not at the front if it is on the table. Please never make ports for connections at the front and side, only at the back. Front only for VR.
