M.2 NVMe SSD PCIe Gen3 X4 M-Key usable with R5_B?

Hi

Can i use an “M.2 MVMe SSD” Drive for Rock5B?

M-Key
PCIe Gen3 X4

If “yes”: plug-and-play or is an adapter needed?

  • i’m a little confused with the M.2 Slot…

Most nvme M.2 drive should be plug-and-play just fine. Some may have compatibility issue but it is not avoidable, even modern PCs have such issue that a particular model does not work/work badly.

If you want to do nvme boot then you need to flash SPI AND remove the emmc module.

There are two and the key M slot on the bottom will work with any NVMe M.2 SSD 80mm in length and also M keyed. Max speed is Gen3 x4 but this will be dynamically negotiated at each boot (PCIe link training) and with dusty/dirty contacts in the M.2 slot you’ll end up with a slower SSD or one that doesn’t work reliably.

As such after installing anything into any of the M.2 slots it’s always a great idea to check with lspci -vv whether degraded link speed/width happened.

Thanks for the informations.

I’ll check the speed with lspci -vv.

Anyone know what size screw to use with a M.2 on the RockPi 5 it seems that standard screw that works with the RockPi4 is too big for the 5?
