Is it possible to update the kernel to a newer version?

I’m quite a beginner, but was reading this: https://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/compiling-linux-kernel-26.html
Can I update the Debian Stretch 4.4 Kernel or is this going to fail?

Also wondering if there is going to be a version of Armbian and Ubuntu Server? Don’t see any news about this for the Rock Pi S.

Thanks!

This might help: https://wiki.radxa.com/Rockpi4/dev/kernel-mainline

This is for the Rock Pi 4, not the S?

For ROCK Pi S, there is some progress in mainline, I think it takes some time to have decent mainline support for rk3308.
