Complete beginner here and I am wondering if it is possible to connect a SATA DVD drive to the ROCK Pi S with some extensions? If so, can anyone recommend specific components to get?

Via USB (via SATA2USB is also OK), but powering via USB might be an issue so you need the one with power supply or just experiment. Purchase one of these
and hope it works …
