I cannot get my 5C to record video from Radxa 4K camera

Hi Radxa Team,

I’m working with the Radxa ROCK 5C Lite and the Radxa 4K Camera (IMX415), with the goal of using the board as an ISP + hardware encoder to record/stream video.

I’ve spent time debugging the full pipeline and wanted to share the current state before asking for guidance.

Current Setup

  • Board: Radxa ROCK 5C Lite

  • Camera: Radxa 4K Camera (IMX415 via CSI)

  • OS: Debian Bookworm KDE (both b1 and b2 images tested)

  • Camera overlay enabled via rsetup

What is working

  • Sensor detection is successful:

    • IMX415 detected over I2C

    • MIPI CSI and CIF pipeline initialized

  • RAW capture via CIF works reliably:

    • /dev/video0 (GB10 Bayer)

    • Able to stream raw frames using v4l2-ctl without crashes

Media topology (simplified)

  • Sensor → DPHY → CSI → CIF → /dev/video0 (RAW) :check_mark:

  • ISP nodes exist:

    • /dev/video11–17 (rkisp_mainpath)

    • /dev/video18–19 (statistics)

ISP output formats (example from /dev/video11)

  • NV12, NV21, UYVY, etc. are exposed

The issue

  • Any attempt to use ISP output (e.g., /dev/video11) causes a system reboot:

    • Example:

      gst-launch-1.0 v4l2src device=/dev/video11 ! autovideosink
      
      
  • Similarly, using GStreamer pipelines with encoding (x264enc / mpph264enc) also results in reboot

Relevant dmesg observations

  • Entity type for entity rkisp-isp-subdev was not initialized

  • Missing rockchip,grf property

  • ISP driver (rkisp0-vir0) loads but appears partially configured

Conclusion so far

  • CIF + RAW capture is stable

  • ISP appears present but not correctly bound/configured

  • System becomes unstable when ISP starts processing frames


What I’m trying to achieve

  • Stable pipeline:

    • IMX415 → ISP → NV12 → MPP encoder → file/RTSP

Questions

  1. Is this a known issue with the Debian KDE images for ROCK 5C?

  2. Is there a recommended OS image or kernel where the IMX415 + rkisp pipeline is fully stable?

  3. Are there specific device tree overlays or parameters required for proper ISP binding (especially related to rockchip,grf or memory regions)?

  4. Is there a reference working pipeline (GStreamer or FFmpeg) for IMX415 on ROCK 5C using rkisp + rkmpp?


I’m happy to provide full logs, media-ctl output, or test specific patches if needed.

I have the same issue with the Radxa Rock 5C Lite w/16GB and Radxa 4K Camera/sensor (IMX415) connected to the 4 lane MIPI-CSI interface.

I ran three 4k@60 tests using gst-launch-1.0 which showed:

  • Camera source only (v4l2src → fakesink):
    600 frames in 15.2s ⇒ about 39.5 fps max ingest.
  • Encoder only (videotestsrc → mpph265enc → fakesink):
    600 frames in 58.0s ⇒ about 10.3 fps encode throughput.
  • Real pipeline (v4l2src → mpph265enc → filesink):
    600 buffers processed in ~10.4s pipeline runtime, but file decodes to only 38 frames (avg 25 fps metadata quirk). This indicates heavy dropping/backpressure/unstable timestamping in encoded output path.

Looks like the stack cannot sustain 4K@60 because mpph265enc throughput is the dominant bottleneck (≈10 fps in isolation). The camera path is better than the encoder path.

I ran a 4k@30 test which failed with a RgaBlit(1513) RGA_BLIT fail: Cannot allocate memory and then it stated a Bus error.

I also ran 2k(QHD)@60, 1440@60 and 1080@60 tests… all of which passed so, it looks like the 4k capture is what’s broken on the board. Sadly, I’m going to have to return a bunch of these boards due to false advertising.
