How to build an openFyde image for 5A or 5C?

Hi.
I couldn’t register on the FydeOS forum to ask (captcha always fails there for me for some unknown reason) and I also couldn’t find much information there that I would clearly understand, so I decided to ask my question here instead.

I have more Rocks 5A and 5C than 5B due to their Raspberry Pi form factor and I wanted to use one or two of them for desktop/media use. But there’s no official openFyde images for those boards. And judging by how much time has passed already since 5A’s release, as well as the fact that Orange Pi images are completely untouched for 5 Pro and 5 Max, I think neither 5A/5C, nor the 5B+ are gonna get support (probably).

I don’t have the money or the will to buy more 5Bs, so I wanted to ask if anyone has easy to understand instructions on how to build openFyde images for 5A and 5C… I’d greatly appreciate it.

I’m assuming it would be very close to how the 5B image is built, and the differences would be in kernel configuration, the DTB and some DTOs, but hey, I’m no Linux kernel engineer and I have no idea how to tackle the problem.

Thanks.

edit: Moved to the proper category.

Maybe check out this post?

And i think you can do the same for Rock 5C, not sure if they have the dtb available, but rock 5A is fairly similar so i think rock 5A dtb would works too

Hey. Thanks for referencing that thread.

I did see it in the past at some point, but for some reason it didn’t work for me.
Sorry for forgetting to mention that. I shall try the method again though!

I’m also reluctant to waste an eMMC module on a multimedia-oriented setup, but, well, I guess one’s gotta experiment…

Update: checked again and it doesn’t work.

Alright. I checked and using the OPi5 image does partially work on the 5A (I’m trying r120).

It does boot and there’s also image on the screen.
Not only that, but the RTL8852BE WiFi module works as well!

Didn’t expect it to even boot, but this is a great starting point.

However, there’s a number of issues, as to be expected:

  • the screen resolution and refresh rate do not get properly detected,
  • Ethernet does not work at all (but I have seen it not working on the OPi5 either),
  • 3 out of 4 USB ports do not work (only the top USB 3 port works).

sighs I wish I knew how to fix these things.
