How do I install a working display in a way I can see desktop/os

I want to install a display on the gpio in a way to work similarly as an hdmi screen for example, like the raspberry pi displays, so I can see what I am doing on the computer. Has anyone done this? I saw something in an other thread but did not really work that way and had to be programmed for something to show up.

If you want plug and play, use an HDMI display.
