eMMC module to µSD adapter not working on raspberry pi 3

Hello all,

New comer here, I recently discovered radxa swappable eMMC modules and decided to try them on my raspberry pi collection. I have bought the official radxa eMMC to µSD adapter (v1.31), and two modules (16 and 32gb).

On RPI 4, the modules are working very well. So well in fact, that I want to replace EVERY sd cards I use with this adapter/module combo. It’s really neat.

And then, I tried on my RPI 3 A+ and it didn’t worked at all, I got the green led blinking four times in loop. I tried reflashing the emmc module again with raspberry pi imager, same issue. However, when I flashed the exact same image on a regular micro sd card, the RPI 3 booted without any issue.

I googled but didn’t find any relevant answer to this problem, so here I am!

I understand that I’m not using radxa SBCs, so compatibility issues may be normal but since the modules works perfectly on RPI4, I’m hoping a workaround exist.

Thanks in advance for your support!

Picture of the adapter? I suspect it same or close to the one I use to flash eMMC modules for my IndieDroid NOVA… it just plugs into a microSD card slot? The images I use are cross platform, Armbian on eMMC or microSD. I don’t recall but maybe U-Boot based, hence the hardware abstraction, eMMC vs. microSD? Boot loader just searches for storage, eMMC given priority as I recall.

Yes indeed, it plug directly into the micro sd card. Here the picture of the adapter:

Mine is similar, but only has the one connector… since only one is need for data transport.
