DietPi OS for Rock5B available

Hi Guys,

I just want to metion that i saw that DiePi now also supports Rock5B.

Maybe good alternative for Armbian or other Linux OS that are more heavy. I plan to install RetroPi including KODI. So all other processes should be as light as possible.

FYI. Every Armbian board also provide minimal images, which are cleaner and leaner then Dietpi:

I haven’t saw heaviest Debian like images then Dietpi as they are full of proprietary scripts that replaces better working stock ones and were never reviewed. Even htop is hacked to hide things so it appear slimmer.

Which processes ?

Well what i used is this page and i expected them to tell the truth or maybe i am to naive which it also could be. So if there are less processes running and less RAM is being used, based on that i conclude it is fairly light. But again maybe i am wrong. Anyways, the more distro’s that are available the better :).

I wouldn’t be sure about that too. Its re-branded Debian / Armbian and they don’t really hide it much, unless you will give them compliments. All what is valuable and different from generic arm images (kernel and boot loader) is taken from someone and transformed into their brand. When you report a bug, they say, oh … file a bug to Armbian forums, go to Odroid forums, … but don’t tell you are running Dietpi as they might not help. More of such distros, no change for you or me. For them.

I really don’t get it why you are so anti this OS. Armbian is also based on Debian just like Ubuntu and mint based on Ubuntu or Rocky Linux based on RHEL. Who cares…

If DietPi guys were asking money for me to use it that would be a whole different story. But they are giving it away for free even if they use a lot of scripts etc.

Let it go bro. There are more important things in life to get all upset about.

Its about creating a value, but it seems you don’t understand what I am telling you. Perhaps this unrelated case might help you to understand?

Tell this to developers which work is assimilated by them. You are supporting them. It is terrible enough - with compliments and donations. Which is core mechanism that drives this world. Lack of it, if pirated projects get that - you are loosing too, but its too slow to notice and understand.

I think you are getting it wrong. I dont just use a certain OS because of some developers supporting it and giving it for free. I use a certain OS, because i maybe have good experience with it (That is why i refused to use Gnome 3 back then…rubbish DE in my opinion). A good OS/software has good developers behind it. Those guys at DietPi still have created some things of their own and that still can make the product be awefull. So even if it is lightweight that does not mean i would be using it if it is rubbish.

My whole perspective is let as many distro’s have a Rock5B build so we the users have choice. I am not saying go use it or do not use it. I am simply saying these guys have a build and i tend to try it out. Is it rubbish? then bye bye DietPi. Nothing more nothing less :).

Like many people LOVEEEE MacOS, i myself dont like it whatsoever. Some co-workers of mine they say the love to have a Mac. After asking why?So far majority of them said because of xterm2, but indeed disliked the rest of the OS.

I’m using DietPi on an X96 flavored box, as well as on a Raspberry Pi Zero 2W, and I really like its power usage and performance on said devices. I am able to put more on the Pi Zero 2W with DietPi ARMv8 than I would with Raspberry Pi OS ARMv7, and it runs faster in side by side comparisons to Raspberry Pi OS, even when more is installed on it. Maybe a server flavor of Armbian would work great on the Pi Zero 2W as well, but I just haven’t tested it out. I’m still waiting on a more refined kernel and GPU drivers before I decide on a distro for my Rock 5B though.

I use Dietpi on a few Raspberry Pi s with specific self-hosted services that doesn’t require much extras.
However, I loaded Dietpi and none of the extras work. The video resolution choices are limited. The Audio not immediately available, and I never got it resolved.
Video playback was very laggy.
Button line, I could not use as a base to create a suitable desktop experience.

That’s good to know. I might give DietPi a try sometime on a Raspberry Pi 4B or other capable device to test out their Ubuntu MATE desktop install, just to see if I can get it to work in any meaningful way. All I have available at the moment is my Rock 5B though, and that wouldn’t be a good test for much of anything due to its current kernel and other general immaturity of the software support for the RK3588.
