Cubie A7Z: IMX219 responds with correct chip ID (0x0219) but driver rejects sensor ("chip found is not target chip")

Board :

  1. Board: Radxa Cubie A7Z (A733)

  2. OS: Debian 11

  3. Kernel:

    5.15.147-21-a733

  4. Camera:
    Waveshare IMX219 Camera Module (Sony IMX219)

Problem :

The IMX219 sensor is detected on the I²C bus and responds with the correct chip ID (0x0219), but the kernel driver fails during probe and never registers the sensor with the VIN/media framework.

During boot the kernel reports:

sunxi:vin:[INFO]: [VIN_DEV_I2C]imx219 read retry 3, read addr is 0x0
sunxi:vin:[ERR]: [imx219]chip found is not an target chip.
sunxi:vin:[ERR]: registering imx219, No such device!

Evidence collected :

1. IMX219 responds correctly over I²C

sudo i2ctransfer -f -y 3 w2@0x10 0x00 0x00 r1
0x02

sudo i2ctransfer -f -y 3 w2@0x10 0x00 0x01 r1
0x19

Chip ID:

0x0219

which matches Sony IMX219.

Additional registers can also be read successfully:

0x016A = 0x09
0x016B = 0x9F

2. I²C device is reachable

sudo i2cdetect -y -r 3

shows

10

indicating the sensor responds at address 0x10.

3. Device Tree

The running device tree contains:

sensor0_mname = "imx219";
status = "okay";
sensor0_twi_addr = <0x20>;
sensor0_twi_cci_id = <3>;

4. Driver exists

imx219.ko

is present in

/lib/modules/5.15.147-21-a733/...

5. VIN framework initializes

/dev/video0
/dev/video1
/dev/media0

exist.

6. Media graph

The media graph contains CSI/ISP/Scaler nodes but no IMX219 sensor entity.

7. Driver binding

The driver does not remain bound after probe.

readlink -f /sys/bus/i2c/devices/3-0010/driver

returns nothing.

Question :

Since the sensor reports the correct Sony IMX219 chip ID (0x0219), why does the A733 BSP reject it with:

chip found is not target chip

Is this:

  • a known BSP bug?

  • incorrect reset/MCLK sequencing?

  • an issue with the IMX219 driver in kernel 5.15.147-21-a733?

  • or is a different device tree/overlay required for the Waveshare IMX219 module?

Not sure if this is helpful and this post is kind of old, but I tried to configure a pi v2 camera (IMX219) with the A7Z. While I eventually got it work, I had to configure everything manually and it still looked bad, so I bought Radxa’s own version of the IMX219 and all the problems went away. I guess it’s pre calibrated for their own camera.
