As @starry suggested, I managed to upgrade the firmware using Radxa OS in a USB stick and edl-ng tool. You can follow the steps described in this post. The current release of Radxa OS comes preloaded with edl-ng v1.4.1, but out of precaution I downloaded edl-ng v1.5.0.
