Adb fails to start on Rock Pi S

when starting the adb service (/etc/init.d/adbd.sh start), I receive the following error:

/etc/init.d/adbd.sh: line 149: echo: write error: No such device

Using the following image:
rockpis_debian_stretch_minimal_arm64_190806_0234-gpt.img.gz

Has anybody gotten it to work?

The kernel needs >= 4.4.143-34-rockchip.

Please post the print of uname -a
