A7S usb-c to hdmi issue

I’m running A7S on r6 cli image and t4 cli image.

After i configured wifi + imx214 camera on the r6 image, it worked for a while but i had to reboot it, it lost hdmi output. Board works fine, wifi, imx214, except HDMI output.

I left the board for a week in the drawer, next time i booted it, hdmi was there, fully working. Worked a few hours and, again, after a reboot, lost hdmi again. I can’t figure out what is the issue. I can only guess it enters standby, no idea really.

I installed the T4 CLI image, the Wi-Fi and imx214 camera work, and I have no issues with HDMI on the T4. I can reboot and shut down (forgiving reboot issue), and HDMI works every time.

Any idea how to fix it?

You might try disable the sleep function to see if that fix the problem.

Unfortunately it did not help. This is a CLI image:

I flashed a new SD card and grabbed the log, so you can analyze it:

1 - First boot with ethernet cable attached, HDMi works:

2- Reboot with ethernet cable attached, HDMI lost signal:

I could notice that right after “husb311 failed”:

[ 2.935339][ T104] husb311 failed to find usb power
[    7.435756][  T350] sunxi:sound-mach:[ERR]: 535 simple_parse_of(): simple_dad

It takes extra ms doing something and HDMI gets signal.

On next reboot, it takes less time to return and HDMI loose signal.

[ 2.952836][ T9] husb311 failed to find usb power
[    4.796748][  T287] sunxi:sound-mach:[ERR]: 535 simple_parse_of(): simple_dad

It was just the first reboot! So i think it needs to wait a few more ms to do something or wait for something.

I bought another cable and an adapter, but it’s still the same.
I booted up without the cable and then plugged it into the USB-C port, same situation, no HDMI output.

isn’t vbus On missing before or after STATE_SAFE? shouldn’t it be set?

Additional log with another 4K USB-C to HDMI cable (no adapter):

1- Disconnected the cable

2- I left it unplugged overnight.

3- Connected the cable, seems to have gone a bit far with more debug info for this cable, but no HDMI.

Do you need to use the R6 image? I saw you mentioned that the T4 CLI has no issues. Currently, the main development work may be on Debian 13 + Linux 6.6, which corresponds to later T4 versions. Are you saying the T4 CLI works normally for you?

Regarding USB-C to HDMI, yes.

T4 CLI has issues with shutdown and reboot (A7S), and i can’t access fb0 (/dev/fb0) and kmssink and glimagesink does not work (or there is no support for it?)

The T4 CLI is not suitable for production in its current state.

You’re using a Type-C to HDMI hub, right? Also, the R6 CLI version might not support hot-plug — you need to connect the display device before booting. The T4’s subsequent version will optimize display failure and reboot failure issues.

Thanks for your reply.

No. I’m using type-c to hdmi cable (tested two different cables, HD and 4K) and an adapter that you connect a hdmi cable to it. No hub.

I have the display connected before booting, but tested if hot-plug would work, but no.

Maybe i wasn’t clear, on the first boot with display connected i have hdmi output, after the boot with the display connected (and working) i ran rsetup to configure wifi using the display not the serial debugger.

After wifi configured i issued a “sudo reboot” (with display connected) and at this time hdmi is lost.

I can live without hdmi output but i usually don’t cross compile. Waiting for your T5 version.

I copied the sun60i-a733-cubie-a7s.dtb from img over the current one and rebooted. HDMI output is back.

So the problem is the new sun60i-a733-cubie-a7s.dtb after update.

No HDMI

With HDMI output:

Update: Please disregard.

I decompiled the dtb and they have the same content. Copied back the updated dtb and hdmi output is still working after several reboots and shutdowns.
